A GIFT TO REMEMBER
Thinking of the events of last summer
My eyes begin to glow and glimmer
My heart swells with such great pride
Why? The reason in you I'll confide
Last summer my family got together at my native place
Frolicking with cousins as was the usual case
Joy and happiness our days did fill
Time seemed to come to a stand-still
While we three cousins were busy in play
We heard Grandma call out and say
"Come children, come and have your breakfast!"
I raced down the stairs not wishing to be last.
As her dear grandchildren, Grandma deeply loved us
It pleased her immensely to fuss over us.
She turned to me with a great big smile
The others appeared in a little while.
My jaws dropped to see beautiful gifts in their hands
A saree and a cell phone of one of the best brands!
"It's Grandma's birthday... don't you remember?"
I stood there like a fool without an answer
Then I ran out and buried my face in my bed
But Grandma came up and kissed me on my forehead.
"I have no gift, I'm sorry" I managed to utter
She wiped my tears saying "Does it really matter?"
She took the three of us for a picnic that afternoon
Camping by the riverside was for us a big soon
While we were all engrossed in eating and singing
"Help!" we heard a voice, shrill and ringing
"Children look here!" called the voice again
We rushed to see it was our Grandma in pain!
A fallen tree trunk hard like concrete
Had rolled off and pinned down poor Grandma's feet
Raja said "Grandma' where's the phone I gifted?
We'll just call home and have the tree lifted."
I couldn't just stand there and see her in pain
My strong will to help her could not go in vain.
Quickly, I ran back towards our tent
My cousins far away on the phone were intent.
Searching for a lever I found a thick rod
Sliding it under the trunk I shifted it, "Thank God"
It was enough for Grandma to pull her feet out,
The action was timely and her feet were fine, no doubt.
She wiggled her toes and sighed with relief,
Raja and Rana returned with a look of grief.
"There is no network Grandma, in this horrible place,
And... Oh! You're fine! This is God's grace!!"
Grandma hugged me and said "You're my wonderful savior.
The gift You gave me today is what I'll always remember"
